Confederate Major General. Enrolled at Davidson College but left in 1855 in order to attend West Point. He graduated from there in 1860. Resigned from the army in 1861 to join the confederate army as a captain in the Ellis Light Artillery reporting to General Magruder. In April 1861 he was elected colonel of the 49th North Carolina where he saw action in the Seven Days battle being severely wounded at Malvern Hill. On November 1, 1862 he was promoted to brigadier general replacing George Anderson. He was subsequently wounded during the battles of Chancelorsville and Spotsylvania. In June 1864 he was promoted to the rank of major general thus becoming the youngest West Point graduate to obtain that rank in the confederate army. On October 19, 1864, during the Battle of Cedar Creek, he was shot through both lungs and was captured by union forces. He died from these wounds. His body was returned to his home town of Lincolnton, North Carolina for burial.
