Doug was the son of Bob and Lou Doug Avery. He grew up on the lands of Swan Ponds, the old Avery plantation. He was a popular young man who went off to Vietnam with the hope of securing for strangers what he loved and cherished about America.While on a classified mission over North Vietnam, his plane ( call sign Hillborn-18) went down on a sandy plain. An impact crater was found in the area but no remains sufficient for DNA testing have ever been found. Doug Avery is now listed as Killed in Action, though this has not been proven absolutely.
His name can be found on the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C., panel 54E Line 023; and on the Vietnam Memorial at the Burke County, North Carolina, Courthouse. A marker has also been placed in the Mountain Home National Cemetery in Johnson City, Tennessee.
