Patricia McCain Burrows, 73, died Aug. 1, 2000, at her daughter's home in Plantation, Fla., after suffering from lung cancer for the previous nine months.
Mrs. Burrows was born Sept. 14, 1926, in San Diego, Calif., to Byron and Gertrude Redmond McCain. During her childhood years, her father worked as a construction engineer, and as a result, her family lived in numerous locations in California and Arizona. She spent many summers in Jackson Hole, Wyo., with her grandparents and other relatives who had been pioneers in the area.
Mrs. Burrows was graduated from South Pasadena, Calif., High School in 1944. She subsequently attended Mills College in Oakland, Calif., and Occidental College in Los Angeles before transferring to the University of Wyoming in Laramie. She earned her bachelor's degree in sociology from UW in 1948.
While at UW, she met Laramie native Lee Burrows. They were married at Moose, Wyo., on Sept. 8, 1948. To this union were born a daughter, (Kathleen) Ellen, and a son, Bruce. Mrs. Burrows was widowed in 1958. Prior to Mr. Burrows' death, the family lived in Casper and Cody, Wyo.
In 1959, Mrs. Burrows moved to Bozeman to be near her grandmother, Ida Simpson Redmond, and her maternal aunt, Dorothy Redmond Hubbard, and soon began working for the Gallatin County Credit Bureau. Except for a brief period of employment at the Montana State University Library, Mrs. Burrows remained with the credit bureau until her retirement in 1992, serving as office manager for several years. In subsequent years, she continued to work part-time, most recently at Insty Prints in University Square shopping center.
Mrs. Burrows was an avid reader with a particular interest in history. She was very skilled as a genealogist and compiled a great deal of information about her family tree. She volunteered regularly at the Family History Center at the LDS church, and she was a member of Gallatin County Historical Center and the Montana Ghost Town Preservation Society. Mrs. Burrows also enjoyed domestic and international travel, and she participated in numerous Elderhostel programs.
Mrs. Burrows was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Joan McCain Nelson; and her granddaughter, Emily Schofield.
Her family and friends will gather to remember her and celebrate her life at 4 p.m. Friday, Aug. 11, at the Bozeman Holiday Inn. Her ashes will be interred at Aspen Hill Cemetery in Jackson, Wyo.
