She was a daughter of Lester Timothy Kemp of South Carolina and Cindy Lou Walker Cregger of Fairfield, and stepdaughter of Sandy Kemp of South Carolina and Harold E. Cregger of Fairfield.

Melanie was a frequent volunteer at the Mountain View Ministries Church of God, Thurmont, MD and planned to be the youth minister at the church. She sang in the Catoctin Praise Band.

Surviving in addition to her parents and stepparents are maternal grandparents, Russell and Evelyn Walker of Fairfield; steppaternal grandparents, Wayne and Rosella Cregger of Emmitsburg, MD; one sister, Angela R. Kemp of Fairfield; one half sister, Lisa Cregger of Fairfield; one half brother, Timothy Kemp of South Carolina; two stepsisters, Lyndsay Long of South Carolina and Stacey Spradlin of Waynesboro, and two stepbrothers, Mark Cregger of Fairfield and Billy Long of South Carolina.
