Joseph E. Mayo was a French Canadian. In Alpine County, he settled on a ranch on the East Carson River, and opened one of the first stores in Markleeville.

Joseph married Maria Wells on March 29, 1882 in the nearby town of Monitor. The couple had four daughters; one daughter was born in December 1882, and another in 1884. Maria would later die of lockjaw in 1906, leaving behind Joseph and the four daughters.

Joseph served as County Assessor in 1890. He died in June, 1915 of Bright's disease and associated complications. His obituary indicates he was 69 years old. For obituary see Record-Courier of June 25, 1915, at www.tinyurl.com/uhxky82.
