Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. Born in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, he was a flour mill owner in Tennessee when he enlisted as a Private in the Confederate 14th Tennessee Regiment at the outbreak of the Civil War. He was elected 2nd Lieutenant and then Major of his regiment in 1862. He was wounded in several battles, including Gaines Mill, Sharpsburg, Chancellorsville and was promoted Colonel in command of an Alabama brigade in August, 1863. He commanded this unit through the Overland Campaign, Petersburg siege and was finally promoted to Brigadier General in January 20, 1865. After the Confederate surrender, he settled in Virginia and was a farmer until his death.
