Scientist. Born in Atlixco, Puebla, México, he lived in the state of Durango for many years and served as a school principal and state school inspector. He founded the Durango Committee for the Universal Scientific Alliance. The Alliance published four volumes of memoirs which include his studies on cactus and desert plants. His first contributions were published in 1905. He was a founding member of the Colegio Nacional and taught subjects related to his specialty. He founded the Biology Instutute of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and was its director for 17 years. When he died, he had published over 220 works relating to cell reproduction, hereditary transmission, compared histology, cancer and onchocercosis. He died in México, Distrito Federal, México and was buried with honors in the Rotonda de Hombres Ilustres.
