Born c.1725, Mr. Ackley died at age 57. His brown sandstone stele with its roller coaster profile features a puffy-cheeked soul effigy in its tympanum, its scarf-like wings and a trio of stars adding to the overall effect of exhuberance. His epitaph, however, resonates with the gloom of the earlier colonial period, and is a variation on the Puritan classic: "Behold and see as you pass by, as you are now so once was I".
