James Maxwell Alford, 86, died at his home in Tallahassee on Friday, May 3.

Mr. Alford was a native of Tallahassee and a member of a pioneer family of Leon County. He was a member of the 1944 class of Leon High School, but graduated from Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville, Georgia. He was proud to have served with the United States Army in the European Theater. He graduated from Florida State University and married the former Connie McCall in 1947.

Mr. Alford was actively engaged in agriculture and the livestock industry until his death. He served as president and was a long-time director of the Leon County Cattlemen's Association, a director of the North Florida Fair Association and on Board of Supervisors of the Ochlockonee Soil and Water Conservation District.

He was a member of the Tallahassee Rotary Club and the Colonels Club. He was a charter member of Faith Presbyterian Church of Tallahassee and was affiliated with First Presbyterian Church of Franklin, North Carolina, where the family has maintained a second home for many years. He also helped establish the St. Teresa Community Church.

His parents, J. Rutledge Alford and Jennie Myers Alford, preceded him in death, as did his two brothers, Julian R. Alford and Charles H. Alford.

A graveside service is planned for Tuesday, May 7, 11:00 a.m. at Roselawn Cemetery on Piedmont Dr. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Faith Presbyterian Church, 2200 North Meridian Road, Tallahassee, FL, 32303.
