Great Grandmother Alice was renamed "Bartie" by my mother who, when she was a little girl, couldn't pronounce the name Barton. Bartie was born in Antigua and had two children: my grandmother, Sybil, and a son, Carroll H. Melanson.

She had a troubled life, but did the best she could, given the circumstances. She and Sybil were never particularly close, though they lived together on and off once they came to the US. Her son, Carroll, took good care of her and supported her whenever she needed help.

After he died prematurely, she began to ail in health. By the time Mom was pregnant with me, she was doing pretty poorly, but she hung on until she knew I'd been safely delivered. Then she died 5 days later.

She's buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Plot: Webster, Range No.: 50, Grave No.:, as yet unknown.
