Cuyler Cook was Lightkeeper at the Genesee Lighthouse at Charlotte. It was while serving the Light that he died, although in fact he was retired by the time of the accident. The Genesee Lightkeeper was also responsible for lighting the small light at the end of Charlotte Pier, but during a terrible storm on the night of August 18th 1853 the current Lightkeeper, Sam Phillips, was unable to reach the light alone. Cuyler Cook took it upon himself to row Phillips out to the light and hold the boat while the light was lit; sadly, while Phillips was attending to the pier light, Cook's boat capsized in the rough waters, drowning him.

Believers in the Genesee lighthouse ghost, blamed for disembodied noises, footsteps and sundry other mysterious happenings, most commonly attribute the disturbances to Cuyler Cook.

Inscription

To God above his spirit yield
He took him in his strength and bloom
When struggling with the seas and waves
He wove his garland for the tomb
