DREW RANDOLPH HEARD, 55, died Tuesday, May 10, 2005, at his home in Dallas, Texas.
Drew is survived by his wife, Terri Wimberly Heard and daughters, Hilary Hope Heard and Haley Wimberly Heard.
Mr. Heard was born February 6, 1950, in Lockhart, TX, and was a shareholder at Jenkens & Gilchrist specializing in commercial litigation. He had also been an associate and partner with Shank, Irwin, & Conant in Dallas.
Drew was a 1972 honors graduate of Baylor University and a 1975 honors graduate of Baylor Law School. Next to "his girls" he truly loved Baylor and was a loyal supporter of the school both on and off the playing field. He always had a gleam in his eye and a kick in his step when he was on the Baylor campus. Since 1953 he stepped with unwavering faith into Baylor Stadium for every game, except one, anticipating the win or big upset. He never gave up on the Bears. Drew was an integral part of a rich tradition his family had at Baylor. The Heard Family was recognized as a First Family of Baylor in 2001.
Drew was a member of Park Cities Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, chairman of the Denominational Affairs Committee, and adult Sunday School teacher. He was a strong defender of the 1963 Baptist Faith and Message. He was excited about the new construction at Park Cities and hopeful about the broadening influence of the church. For more than 16 years, the Heard Class was led by a Bible scholar who was certain in his Christian walk and who was always asking more questions and seeking more answers to strengthen the faith of class members. A teacher in the best Socratic way, Drew was not afraid to tackle the toughest issues. He conducted his life "the rest of the week" in a Godly way and encouraged many a troubled friend in a positive way. He was without question one of God's strongest warriors and best minds.
Drew was a member of the Baylor Bear Foundation, the Dallas Baylor Steering Committee, and a life member of the Baylor Alumni Association. He served as a director and officer of the Bruce McMillan, Jr., Foundation where he was instrumental in securing scholarship assistance for Baylor students and for students attending other colleges. He was a member of the State Bar of Texas, American Bar Association, Dallas Bar Association, a Counsellor of the Baylor University School of Law and Life Member of the Baylor Law Alumni Association. His law practice consisted of complex commercial and oil and gas litigation. At Baylor Law School, he was a member of Baylor Law Review. He had an old-school love for "the law" and found great satisfaction in his career. Drew and Terri served as co-presidents of the Baylor Parents League. He was also a member of The President's Club and the Estate Planning Network. At Baylor, Drew was a member of Sigma Tau Epsilon Social Service Fraternity, Eta Sigma Phi, Phi Alpha Delta, and Phi Alpha Theta.
After God, family, and Baylor, Drew enjoyed sports and was happy jogging and watching every minute of every Olympic Games.
In addition to his immediate family, Drew is survived by his mother Marietta Heard, brother, Dow Heard and wife Russelle, and sister, Debbie Heard, all of Houston. Other survivors are niece Heather Heard, her mother, Francie Nemec Green, and niece Bowen Hunter, Uncles, John G. Heard, Robert Heard, Wyatt Heard, M.B. Martin, Aunt Sammie Saunders and numerous cousins. His is also survived by sister-in-law and brother-in-law Brownie and Bob Shytles, their children and grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his father, Dow H. Heard, Jr.
Visitation will be held 6:00 - 8:00 P.M. Friday at Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home. Services will be Saturday, May 14, 2005, at 10 a.m. in the sanctuary of Park Cities Baptist Church with a reception afterwards in the fellowship hall. Shuttles will run from Temple Emanu-El, southside of the south parking lot.
