Virgil Hobby Sr., 83, of Townsend passed away Saturday, Oct. 2, 2010, at the Brunswick hospital of Southeast Georgia Health System.

Mr. Hobby was born June 10, 1927, in Sylvester to the late Lundzy and Alberta Hobby. He had been a resident of St. Simons Island and McIntosh County since 1959, and was the owner and operator of Hobby Painting and Roofing Company. He was a member of the Jehovah's Witnesses Crescent Congregation and served as an Elder. Mr. Hobby was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving honorably during the Korean Conflict.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 4, 2010, from the Altama Avenue Congregation of the Jehovah's Witnesses in Brunswick. The family received friends from the Social Hall of Chapman Funeral Chapel from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct 3, 2010.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Hobby of Townsend; seven sons, Joseph Kenny of Bradenton, Fla., Michael Hobby of Townsend, Virgil Hobby, Jr. of Port Byron, N.Y., Lane Speight, Tori Hobby and Clinton Hobby, all of Brunswick, and Brenton Hobby of Midway; three daughters, Susan H. Hendrix of Crescent, Cindy Speight of Laurinburg, N.C. and Teresa Speight of Raleigh, N.C.; two brothers, Curtis Nelms of Moultrie and Clem Nelms of Thomasville; 25 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Chapman Funeral Chapel and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.
