Civil War Union Army Officer. He was commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant in the 23rd New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on August 26, 1862, and was mustered into Company B on September 13, 1862. He served through the December 1862 Fredericksburg Campaign, and the May 1863 Battle of Chancellorsville, and was honorably mustered out on June 27, 1863.

The funeral of Samuel E Branin was held this afternoon at 2 o'clock from his late home, 338 South Broad Street. The services were conducted by the Rev Charles H Elder. Mr Branin was a veteran of the Civil War and his funeral was attended by delegations from Bayard Post GAR and Twenty-third Regiment of New Jersey Volunteers. There was also a delegation from Ruth Lodge, Daughters of Rebekah. Interment will be made at Riverview Cemetery under the direction of Harry A Ashmore.
