Obituary on cemetery web site: Alfred Versace, 84, a former resident of Shillington, passed away peacefully in the morning of Aug. 1, 2008, in The Villages, Fla., where he had resided since 2004. Born Dec. 7, 1923, in Reading, he was the last surviving of three sons born to the late Pasquale and Francesca (Paone) Versace. Al graduated from Reading High School in 1941 and enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1943, where he was trained as a fighter pilot. He received an honorable discharge in 1946. Following World War II, he enrolled at Virginia Polytechnic University in 1946 and graduated with honors in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science in accounting. Al's career as a CPA began in 1950 with the accounting firm, Ernst & Ernst. During his 54-year career in accounting, Al worked in many areas of business before retiring in 2004 from Versace & Associates, a company which he founded in 1986. He was a member of American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and held several official positions with the Reading chapter of Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants. He assisted the late Richard Caron in the founding of Chit Chat Farms in 1957 and contributed many years of service to this organization. Now known as Caron Foundation, it is a nationally recognized alcohol and drug rehabilitation center located in Wernersville. Al was a member of St. John Baptist de la Salle Roman Catholic Church, Shillington, and St. Timothy's Church in The Villages. He enjoyed travel, gardening, playing billiards, watching baseball and dancing with his wife of 56 years, Blanche, who predeceased him in November 2007. Al is survived by his three sons: Pasquale A., Shillington; Michael S., Marshfield, Mass.; and Philip, Wyomissing. He is also survived by his daughter-in-law, Bonnie, wife of Philip, and his grandson, Daniel, son of Michael. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in St. John Baptist de la Salle RCC. Entombment will be in Gethsemane Cemetery Mausoleum. Viewing for friends and family will be held Friday, 6 to 9 p.m., and Saturday, 8 to 9:30 a.m., in Henninger Funeral Home Inc., 229 N. Fifth St., Reading, PA 19601. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to American Diabetes Association, 419 Washington St., Reading, PA 19601.
