Hughes is the son of Emmett Bradley Gobble and Mary "Mollie" Ann Hughes. His older brother Lloyd B. Gobble served in the United States Army during World War I and his younger brother Quentin J. Gobble enlisted on the same day with Hughes in the United States Marine Corps. They were assigned together and Quentin attended his funeral service at Brookwood American Cemetery, London, England.
