John Joseph Rothrock was the youngest of three known children of Henry W. Rothrock and his second known wife, Louisa Tune Klase (1855-1924). Louisa married Joseph Manning Sawyer (1865-1934) in 1890, after Henry died, and had two known additional children. Henry was first married to Sarah Ann Trumbore Hartzell (1850-1873) in 1873, with whom he had one known child.
In 1900 John was living with the Joseph M. Sawyer family in Philadelphia. In 1910 John was a sailor aboard the U.S.S. New Jersey, stationed at Hampton Roads, Virginia and serving in the U.S. Navy. John married Ida Carolyn Schwaab (1891-1921) on 17 Jul 1912 at Delaware County, Pennsylvania. John and Ida were the parents of three sons, all of whom died at birth, namely:
- Edward Rothrock (1914-1914)
- Henry Rothrock (1916-1916)
- baby boy Rothrock (1917-1917)
After Ida died John married the widow Mrs. Julia Super Waruschok (1895-1986) (widow of John Waruschok, 1894-1918, died in WWI) in 1922 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and had four known children, namely:

5. Arthur A. Rothrock (1925-2007)
6. Richard (R. or H.?) Rothrock (1926-???)
7. Helen L. Rothrock Brown (1929-1996)
