Joe was born July 11, 1919, at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. His biological mother's name as he understood it was Mary Anderson. No father's name was ever found. He was immediately given up for adoption. He was adopted by Henry and Mary Von Hagel as an infant through the Chicago Catholic Charities. He was then given the name Joseph Henry Von Hagel. Henry and Mary already had another child, Rita, whom they also adopted as an infant in 1917. At some point, many years later, in the early 1960's as best as can be figured out, Joe decided to change his name to Joseph Howard Anderson. This was the name he used up to his death in 1988. The birth year on his headstone of 1924, was his choice, so he didn't appear so much older than his wife, Barbara. When he passed away, Barbara honored his wishes and had the year 1924 listed, instead of the correct year of 1919.
