Civil War Confederate Major General. With the outbreak of the Civil War, he resigned his commission as a Captain Instructor of Cavalry Tactics at West Point to enlist into the Confederate Army. His first assignment was to organize a school for cavalry instruction and he was appointed Colonel in command of the 6th Virginia Cavalry. In March 1862, he was promoted Brigadier General of the Virginia Infantry and was severely wounded in the leg at the Second Battle of Bull Run. In 1863, during his convalescence, he served as a recuitting officer and as Chief of the Bureau for the War Department. In February 1864, he was promoted Major General in command of the First Corps, Army of Tennessee, leading in actions throughout the Overland Campaign, at the Battle of Cold Harbor and the Siege of Petersburg. In April 1865, he surrendered with his division at Appomattox Court House. After the war, he pursued business interests and served as a US Civil Engineer.
