Rev Francisco Sihuay OFM
(Javier Sihuay)

Rev Francisco was born Javier Sihuay on December 23, 1923 in Chupaca, Peru. He originally belonged to the Peruvian Province of the XII Apostles, where he held the office of Guardian in different houses within the Province. After leaving Peru for personal reasons, he found a welcome at our Commissary in Washington DC, arriving in 1976. Since that time, he has spent his energies working with the Spanish-speaking immigrants arriving in that area, and founded the fraternity "Signore dei Miracoli" or "Lord of Miracles".

In 1991, he was permanently incardinated into the Custody of the Holy Land. In 1990, writing to the Visitator General, he said, "I am called to evangelize, for to evangelize is to know Christ as Saviour and Lord, so that everyone can meet Him for the forgiveness of his sins and the divine life." This was also his program of life. Rev Francisco, in fact, was especially known throughout Washington D.C., for his ministry of confession. Many a priest and bishop of the diocese knew our Commissary through the merciful and paternal
acceptance of Br Francisco, to the point that sometimes in conversation the priests of the diocese would say that the Commissary was the place of Fr Francisco.

When not in the confessional, he was either in the chapel or in the beautiful "Green House", the nursery where Rev Francisco tended and loved to grow flowers that would be used in the Church and to honor the Virgin Mary, to whom he had a special devotion.

Rev Francisco had retired to Carroll Manor Nursing Home, not far from the Commissary in Washington DC, where he spent more than 30 years as a friar of the Custody of the Holy Land. Silently, as he lived, he returned to the house of the Father, on April 12th, 2013. Reception of the body, visitation, and vespers was on Tuesday, April 16 at the Franciscan Monastery, 1400 Quincy St NE, Washington DC. On Wednesday, April 17 there the Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in the main church. Interment followed at the Franciscan Monastery Cemetery.
