Carol Howes Chambers, 66, of Wigghill Rd Chester, died Wednesday (April 26, 2000) at Middlesex Hospital after a long struggle with cancer.
She was born in Springfield, MA on Jan 24, 1934 daughter of Richard Howes of Vero Beach, FL and the late Ruth (Little) Howes.
She graduated from Manchester High School in 1951, UCONN in 1955, then earned her Masters Degree from UCONN in 1980. She grew up in Manchester, moving to Avon, Hartford and lastly Chester, ten yrs ago. She had taught at the secondary education level, and 12 years at Conn Housing Finance Authority in Rocky Hill as Assets Manages, retiring in 1996
She was a member of the United Church of Chester. Carol's membership in various organizations demonstrated her strong belief in human rights, civil rights and her defense of the disenfranchised as well as environmental concerns. She was an avid outdoors person who loved her gardens and hiking.
Besides her father, she is survived by her sons, David of Manchester, Jonathan and his fiancee Susan Peplau of Vernon, Steven and his long time friend Sheri Luman of Broad Brook; her grandson Michael, and her brothers, Richard and his wife, Joanne Howes of Washington DC, Gordon Howes of Winsted, David and his wife Joanne Howes of San Jose, CA; her sisters, Susan and her husband Bill Peowski of Mystic and Barbara Howes of S. Kingston, RI, and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Sat. April 29 at 11 a.m. at the United Church of Chester, 29 West Main St,Chester.Contributions may be made in her memory to the Middlesex Hospital Weiss Hospice Unit 28 Crescent St Middletown, Ct 06457. The Robinson, Wright & Weymer Funeral Home, 34 Main St, Centerbrook is in charge of arrangements.
