Ruth J. Bailey, 88, died June 2, 2000 in Ashville, North Carolina of natural causes.

She was the daughter of Charles Robert and Deseret Aldredge Johnson of Logan. She attended Utah State University where she was a member of Sorosis sorority. She worked as a deputy clerk in the U.S. District Court in Salt Lake for 25 years. She was an active volunteer with the American Red Cross, YWCA and the Tenth East Senior Citizen's Center. She was a member of the Salt Lake Community of the Baha'i World Faith. She was the widow of the late state senator, J. Arthur Bailey who died in 1949 of a smoking related disease.

She was a kind, intelligent, understanding and loving single mother, guiding all four of her children to graduate from college. During her retirement years, she became an accomplished pianist.

She is survived by daughters, Mary Dawn Bailey, Charlotte, N.C.; and Penny Ruth Myers, Asheville, N.C.; and son, Lynn Reed Bailey, Boulder, CO; Preceded in death by son, John A. Bailey, Jr. of Salt Lake; two sisters, Clover Sanders, Kaysville; and Dixie Yotter, lake Elsinore, Ca; and two brothers, Lund A. Johnson, PaloAtlo, CA; and Reed Johnson, Los Angeles, CA.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to the American Red Cross are welcome.
