MOS: 0351 AntiTank Assault.

Robert was born and raised in San Benito, Texas. He was very athletic and leaned slightly to his right when he walked. A lower lip angled down-
ward and to his right drew attention to a lopsided smile. His body's tendency to favor his right side was balanced by his preference to throw left-handed.
Robert was 17 years old when he left San Benito High School to enlist in the Marines. "Bobby was determined to enlist. My dad gave him permission, but my mom wouldn't. It took a long time and a lot of prayer, before she gave it. After he was killed mom was guilt-stricken
and never got out of her depression."
Robert enlisted in the Marines 23 April 1963, at the San Antonio Recruiting Office.
The 1st Marine Division landed at Phu Bai, Vietnam, in December 1965. Robert had been with Golf Company, 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division when they had departed from Camp Pendelton.
Five months later, the 2nd Battalion was sent into the Co Bi Than Tran Valley on a search and destroy operation. Robert died as a result of a gunshot wound to the back from enemy rifle fire, during an engagement with enemy forces in the vicinity of Phu Nai and Co Bi Thanh Tran area and 8 kilometers south of Phong Dien.
He was the first of 12 Vietnam War casualties from his hometown of San Benito. Robert's death was not the only bad news the Corkill family had
received. Across town, the parents of his cousin, Ray Guerra, were learning that Ray had been wounded in a separate incident on the day
Robert was killed. Ray Guerra, who was serving with the 2nd Battalion, 9th Marines and had just returned to duty, lost his legs during an
explosion from a hostile mine.
Robert was single and served his country for 3 years, 1 month and 22 days and was KIA #4,580.
Tour of duty date unknown. Robert had been in Vietnam for about 6 months.
Robert was 20 years, 4 months and 22 days old.
Survived by his parents, Ernesto W and Marcelina R Corkill, and 2 sisters, Velma and Marisela of 188 Florencia St, San Benito, Texas.
