Stanley was a noted figure in publishing. He started his career in 1906 as a cub reporter at a Benton Harbor newspaper. He was also the business manager on the old Kalamazoo Telegraph-Press.

He served as a Lieutenant in the US Army during World War I and was wounded in France. Upon his return to the United States, he purchased an interest in the News-Palladium. He went on to become Vice President and Secretary of the St. Joseph Herald Press Company, which was affiliated with the News-Palladium.

He was a former chairman of the Berrien County Republican Party and in 1962 had the honor of joining 23 other Michigan newspaper executives for dinner with President Kennedy at the White House.

At the time of his death, he was President of the Palladium Publishing Company, which operated the Benton Harbor News-Palladium and radio station WHFB. He was also a board member of the Mercy Hospital Board of Trustees, where he served 23 years as president and led 2 successful building campaigns.
