The son of Christian & Catherine (Fleischman) Hemler, he married Louisa Ann Felix January 10, 1860, in Conewago Chapel, Adams County; children: Sylvester Francis (b. 09/10/60), Martin Henry (b. 11/11/62), Sarah Catherine "Sallie" (b. 04/30/65), Louisa Ann (b. 06/01/68), Weldon Jacob (b. 04/27/70), John Christian (b. 04/13/72), Jerome E. (b. 12/10/74), George Francis (b. 07/27/77), and Henry Vincent (b. 07/13/79). In 1860, he was a farmer living in Mount Pleasant Township, Adams County.

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in Adams County October 16, 1862, mustered into federal service at Gettysburg November 14 as a private with Co. F, 165th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863, in Gettysburg. He is listed as having James A. Little substitute for him but obviously one or the other either changed his mind or George failed to find the necessary funds to pay Little.

He later was elected county commissioner and assisted in organizing McSherrystown's Farmer's State Bank and served as its director. Cause of death is listed as "chronic interstitial nephritis" with a "cerebral hemorrhage" a contributing factor.
