Decorated policeman, family man.

Detective Sergeant Jimmy Allen of the Providence Police Department, Providence, Rhode Island, was shot and killed in the line of duty. A native to the city, he is the son of Retired PPD Capt. Lloyd J. Allen and the late Jacqueline (Kelly) Allen of Cranston. Allen was a communicant of St. Thomas' Church in Providence.

Det. Allen was an honored member of the Providence Police Department for 27 years. He was a member of Providence F.O.P. Lodge 3 and was very active in many community organizations. Allen was 50 years old.

To his friends, of which he had many, he was known as Jimmy, not James not Jim... always "Jimmy".
He was noted for his ever-present trench coat which he always wore, rain or shine. He had the most infectious laugh you ever heard those who knew him could tell you that no one laughed alone in his presence.
He leaves his father, a wife and two daughters.

I had the pleasure of knowing Detective Allen from his early years as a posted police officer at my favorite grocery store.
