Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He served during the Civil War as superintendent of volunteer recruiting services in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Army March 13, 1865 upon the recommendation of General Ulysses S. Grant. Retired from active duty in 1869 to his home in Charlestown, Indiana. Served in the United States Army during the War of 1812, and under General Winfield Scott during the Mexican War. At the start of the Civil War he was the Colonel of the 3rd United States Regular Cavalry.
