Wesley was working as a farm hand for Mary's father in McLain Co, IL. Her father was the first to plow his homestead there. Wesley continued as a farm hand after he married Mary Jan 15, 1860. Their first child was born there Dec 10, 1861. Wesley enlisted for the Civil War Aug 7, 1862 as a private in the 12th Regiment of Infantry Illinois Volunteers to serve 3 years. He was discharged Jan 29, 1863 at St Louis, MO "by reason of disability supervening upon Typhoid Fever in Sept 1862." He was described as "23 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, dark complexion, black eyes, black hair, by occupation a farmer." His first 4 children were born in McLean Co, IL 1861-1867, then 1 in Hancock Co, IL in 1869, and 1 in Benton Co, IN in 1870. His last 4 were born in Cowley Co, KS 1874-82, where he owned land and many of his descendants stayed.
