John moved to Prince William County before 1750, but by 1766, when John came back to Stafford county, he was living on the south side of Beaver Dam Run. The tract was originally deeded to him by his father and lay across the creek from the land bequeathed to his brother, Joseph. Eight children are named in his will, one of which (John Combs, Jr. 1743-1780) predeceased him.
