US Congressman. He immigrated to the United States in 1816, settled in New York City and became a prominent merchant and banker. He served as a member of the New York City Board of Aldermen and on numerous civic committees. White was a Director of the New York branch of the Bank of the United States, and was appointed President of Chemical Bank when it was founded in 1831. As Cashier of the Manhattan Bank, he was charged with stealing the bank's books to hide evidence of fraudulent loans, but acquitted. However White was convicted of assaulting Jonathan Thompson, a member of the bank's board of directors. He was fined $250 and jailed for 15 days. In 1828 he was elected to the US House of Representatives as a Jacksonian. He was reelected three times and served from March 1829 until his resignation in 1835. During his last complete term he was Chairman of the Committee on Naval Affairs. After leaving Congress White returned to his New York City business interests. A longtime member of the New York Militia, White was appointed Paymaster General, and during his term in Congress also served as Quartermaster General. He was an organizer of the New York Central Railroad and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. In 1845 White was a Delegate to the New York State Constitutional convention.
