Mother Ruby graduated from Lincoln High School in 1968. She was the widow of the late Washington Smith Sr. She loved her family and friends and she was always willing to help others in any way she could. Mother Ruby enjoyed going to gospel programs as often as she could.
Her fondest memories will be cherished by her four children, Velencia Darcella Smith, Draford (Carolyn) Smith, Lorenzo (Hazel) Smith and Citronella Smith, all of Sumter; a granddaughter reared in the home, Valencia S. Patterson of Sumter; a sister, Flozell (Hosea) Smith of Newark, N.J.; an aunt, Lillie B. Nelson of Sumter; a devoted friend, Olivia Johnson; a son-in-law, Edward Patterson of Augusta, Ga.; a grandson, Eric Leneau of McCormick; four great-grandchildren, Kardre' Fuller, Jasmine Leneau, Bry'dea Middleton and De'Nardrick Middleton; a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by a son, Washington Smith Jr.; a grandson, Derrick James; four sisters, Minnie H. Laws, Annie B. Harriott, Elizabeth B. Manning and Gertrude B. McBride; as well as three brothers, Frank Balls, Charlie Harris and Glenn Harris.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today at Church of God By Faith, 609 Atlantic Ave., with Elder James Lucas presiding, Elder Andre McBride in charge of the eulogy, assisted by Elder Cleveland McBride Sr., Minister David Laws and the Rev. Telley Gadson. Interment will follow in the Church of God By Faith Inc. cemetery, Lynchburg.
The family will receive friends at the home, 409 Silver St., and the procession will leave the home at 12:30 p.m. Nieces will serve as flower bearers and nephews as pallbearers. Sumter Funeral Service Inc. is in charge of arrangements.
