Jasper Trotti Martin, born 1831, Toney Hill Bay, Barnwell District, South Carolina, son of Capt. Stephen H. and Sarah (Touchstone) Martin. He is likely named for Gaspar Trotti, of Orangeburg and Barnwell Co., SC, a man of prominence in the region. Capt. Stephen Martin had numerous land and business dealings with his family and appraised the estate of his son, Lawrence George Trotti in 1820. J.T. Martin moved with his parents from Barnwell Dist., SC to Lowndes Co., GA about 1842, where he grew to manhood on his father's plantation east of Valdosta, GA.
When the War began, Jasper Martin quickly joined H Co., 26th Georgia Volunteer Infantry. Two brothers, Lucius B. Martin and McDuffie Martin, along with a nephew, Wm Columbus Martin, had joined Co. G, 26th GA on 21 Sept 1861. Lucius B. Martin was wounded in action in Virginia, sent to the hospital on the campus of the University of Virginia where he died and is buried at the Confederate Cemetery in Charlottesville, VA. Wm Columbus Martin was severely wounded at Antietam, MD on 17 Sept 1862; discharged due to wounds. McDuffie Martin was sick at Ocmulgee Hospital in Macon, GA and discharged with hypertrophy of the heart.
Jasper T. Martin died in battle at Gettysburg or shortly thereafter. One report states that he died of exhaustion during the actions on 3 July 1863. He is buried on the battlefield (now Gettysburg National Park.)
Jasper T. Martin married Rebecca Ann Stephens ca. 1854 in Lowndes Co., GA. She was born Oct, 1838 in Ga.
Jasper and Rebecca had the following children:
1. Hampton Buchanan Martin, 1855 - 1919.
2. Harriett Josephine Martin, 1858 - 1890.
3. Mary Jane "Mollie" Martin, 1860 - 1918.
4. Gustava Beauregard Martin, Sr., 1861 - 1934.
Mrs. Rebecca Martin remarried after the War to John Carroll and had several more children by him.
She died at Cuthbert, Ga. in Feb 1910. Her obituary shows in the Valdosta Times:
"Mrs. R.A. Carroll's Death
The Times regrets that an error was made in announcing the death of Mrs. R.A. Carroll two or three weeks ago. We intimated at that time that the death was due to an overdose of morphine taken by mistake. We are informed by members of the family that her death was due to heart trouble with which she had been affected for some time.
She is survived by a brother, Mr. J.J. Stephens, of Thomasville, Ga., and by the following children: Mr. H.B. Martin of Thomasville, G.B. Martin of Valdosta, J.J. Carroll of Valdosta, Miss Mattie Carroll of Valdosta and Mrs. Kirkland of Vienna and Mrs. W.T. Bigby of Macon, Ga.
Her funeral occurred on Monday after her death at Cuthbert, Ga., at five o'clock in the afternoon."
