(White Plains) - Several from here attended the funeral of Mr. W. T. McJunkin at Chapel Hill Sunday. There was a large concourse of relatives and friends. Many kind tributes were payed. Truly a good man has gone to his reward.

The McJunkin Plantation/Home Place was one mile east of what would become the tiny hamlet of Penton. It was settled by Theo about the time he married Adella. They had both lived close to Milltown when they married.

The original log home of one & a-half stories was at the top of the hill, above where a grove of pecan trees still exists today (the children planted the first trees about 1865). Below this grove of trees is the little family cemetery.

Built with slave labor, the home was of two sections with a dog-trot pass-through which served as a porch. There was a wooden stairway to the boys bedroom upstairs.

There was a large log-built detached kitchen, and it was said the cooking fireplace was 6 feet tall, 6 feet wide and 4 feet deep, made of real brick. This building was behind the house close to the dining room, which had an outdoor access to bring in the food.

A rather large home for it's log construction, there was a dining room & living room on the left side of the house, and the parents & girls bedrooms on the right.

In the dining room was a long table and a bench on each side.

There was also a plantation office, smoke house, two barns, carriage shed and well house. There were no out houses, as they used chamber pots.

The log house was clad with boards inside & out to make it look like a "farm house," along with front & back porches in the early 1880's, and it was mostly destroyed by a tornado in 1890.

A new house was built by Tom (who inherited the farm) down the hill in a hollow for better protection from bad weather. It was a much smaller home also. The farm was sold in the late 1920's & the newer house was later bricked over and survives today (2012), although it does not resemble it's wooden identity.

From another donated family record:

William Thomas McJunkin was a well-to-do plantation owner at Chapel Hill, Ala. He was owner of one of the first Star automobiles that came out, and prior to the Star, he was the proud possessor of a plush four-door surrey with fringe on top. He was said to be a man ahead of his time because of his foresight into the future, his power to hypnotize, and among other things.

*The farm was actually between Penton & Chapell Hill, but more referred to as being "at Penton."

Tom rented the farm in 1901 & moved the family to West Point, GA, and moved back in 1906. In 1909 he rented the farm again & moved to the new mill village of Shawmut. After about 10 years there he & Ida moved back to the farm until after she died.

Married, on the morning of the 6th, at the residence of the bride's mother, Mrs. James Christler, by Rev. J.W. Callahan, Mr. J.B. Haralson to Miss M.E. Christler and Mr. W.T. McJunking to Miss J.I. Christler, all of this county.

It was a double wedding, at the home of James & Rebecca Crisler, Ida & Mary's mother. Chambers Co. Marr. Rec. 1861-1890 - p. 302 - ? - W. L. McJunken (groom) - J. J. Christian - 01/06/1884 - J. B. Haralson, LS.

The LaFayette Sun, Wednesday, August 9, 1893 - W.T. McJunkin listed as a Jeffersonian Democrat.

The LaFayette Sun - 10/17/1900 & 11/07/1900 - Chambers County Teetotaler's Lodge Meeting at Penton - Lila & Minnie McJunkin gave recitations. (Teetotaller's were a prohibition group)

The above is incorrect. He died in La Grange, Troup Co., GA, according to some of his granddaughters. There is no death record in Troup Co., GA for him. I believe the death certificate was issued in Chambers County after he was brought back for burial.

Also, Roanoke is in Randolph Co., AL, not Chambers.
