James Hurley was my grandfather. He and my grandmother, Grace MacGinnis Hurley, separated about 1929 under circumstances that are unclear. They had at least eight children together. The family lore held that he had died, but for many years he lived in the same city just a mile from his family.

During his marriage to Grace, he worked for the railroad. After the separation, he lived with a cousin in Charlestown. He also lived for at least two years in the Long Island Hospital in Boston, a facility for the indigent. In 1954 he married Viola Tremblay. They lived in Boston's South End until his death in 1959.
