Della Mae Ertel went to live with Jesus on Sunday, March 24, 2013, in Marion General Hospital after an extended illness. She was born the daughter of Thomas and Mabel Howard in Upland, Indiana on November 10, 1924. She was the third of eight children.
She attended the one room school, Center School in Monroe Township for the first 5 years of her schooling and went on to graduate from Jefferson Township Schools in 1942. She worked at Farnsworth Radio Factory (later RCA and Thomson) during WWII and met her sailor when he returned after the war. She married Glenn Denny Ertel on April 12, 1947. Together they shared nearly 60 years of marriage before he passed away in 2006. They resided in the community of Swayzee and raised their family of four. Glenn and Della Mae provided their children with a perfect all American childhood. Della Mae was an accomplished seamstress. She also enjoyed quilting, crocheting, knitting, cooking, reading, and crossword puzzles. She read her Bible daily. After she retired from Oak Hill Schools as a cafeteria cook, she and her husband enjoyed trips and spending time with their grandchildren and other family members. She attended Swayzee United Methodist Church for many years. In later years, she attended Maple Run Friends Church.
Della Mae said that her dad told his family to be "gritty" when facing pain or troubles. That word, gritty, certainly described her! All of her life, when facing pain or loss, she certainly was known by all to be "gritty". She was always "fine" and was always commenting how blessed she was. She enjoyed listening to the Gaithers and IU basketball. Her sense of humor was outstanding. She loved to spend time with her family, visiting, and sharing stories. She was known by her family for her wonderful cooking ability and shared her chocolate chip cookie recipe freely with them as well as fresh baked cookies.
Della Mae is survived by three daughters, Susan (Derek) Patterson and Sarah Ertel, both of Swayzee, Cindy (Steve) Cape from Angola; and son, Joe (Marcia) Ertel, Cary, N.C. She also is survived by nine grandchildren, Doug and Denny Patterson, Erin Vermillion, Eric Stairs, Stephanie Everts, Nicholas Ertel, Christopher Ertel, Rachel Ertel, and Hannah Cape; six great-grandchildren; three brothers, Bob (Charlene) Howard, Richard (Peggie) Howard, and Herb (Gerrie) Howard; and many nieces and nephews.
Those who remain will cherish her memories and consider themselves better for having had her in their lives.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Todd and Anna Louise Himelick; and two brothers, Chuck and W.D. Howard.
Funeral Service will be at 10 a.m., on Thursday, March 28, 2013 in Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, Rybolt Chapel, 314 N. Washington Street, Swayzee, Indiana with the Reverend Jim Miller officiating. Burial will be in Grant Memorial Park, Marion, Indiana.
