Botanist. Born at Gallion, Alabama, he graduated from Harvard University in 1895 and from Cornell University with a pathology Ph.D. degree in 1898. Through his research, he discovered aureomycin and virus diseases of plants. He wrote the first plant pathology book “Fungous Diseases of Plants” (1909) and “Plant Physiology, With Special Reference to Plant Production” (1924). As a emeritus professor at Lederle Laboratories 1943, he made advances in the understanding of cotton root rot, discovered the conidial state of the pathogen, which resulted in the transfer of the species from Ozonium to Phymatotrichum. He died at age 84 New Haven, Connecticut.
