OBITUARY OF HENRY LONES
(Transcribed from a Knoxville paper of Tuesday Morning, August 9, 1848)

One of those distresses which no human care or foresight can prevent, and though inevitable at some period, no delay seems to have power to alleviate, comes upon us in the death of an old and time-honored citizen, Henry Lones, Sr. He was born in Bucks County in the state of Pennsylvania, September 4th, 1765, from whence he removed with his father, George Lones, to Shenandoah County, Virginia. At an early day he left his father's roof and the abodes of civilized life to settle in the comparative wilderness of East Tennessee; and immediately upon his coming fixed himself upon the farm near Knoxville on which he spent the rest of his life. Here, though far from his parental and collateral relatives, he died in the midst of a large concourse of his descendants. His religious opinions, formed by the early influence of his father were in accordance with the views of the Lutheran church, though for the want of one of that faith in his neighborhood, he was accustomed to attend services of other Christian denominations.

The character of the deceased was marked by strict and rigid integrity and by a uniform uprightness of conduct. As a citizen, it may truly be said there was none better--none more willing to act up on the requirements of the laws and none less disposed to enforce them in a litigious spirit--none more honest, truthful and correct. That he had lived long among us seemed truly to deepen the sorrow of his departure. He died on the 27th of July, 1848, at the age of eighty-two years, 10 months, and 23 days.

The end of a life spent in the strict performance of regular duties and religious observances, was peaceful and serene; and without repining, he yielded up the breath of existence to Him in whose service it had been so long employed--not sorrowing that the glass through which he had before seen but darkly was to be removed and the brightness of his glory beheld face to face.

Germans were baptized with a spiritual name from the Bible (which was never used), plus a Rufname ("Call name" from German rufen, to call), the name by which the child would be addressed in everyday life. Georg Heinrich was called Heinrich (or Henry in English), because his Rufname was Heinrich.

His father was called Georg (George in English), because he was baptized Johann Georg, and Georg/George was his Rufname.

At baptism of a child, the Godfather chosen usually had the same exact given name as that intended for the child. So Henry Trombauer was undoubtedly named Georg Heinrich Trombauer, but called Heinrich/Henry.

Johann Georg's older brother, Johann Leonhart, a.k.a. "Leonard Lonas" (1742 - 1828) was my 4th ggf. He lived in Shenandoah County right alongside George Lonas (1744-1793*), and according to family records was buried near him. So I have created a page for him with a long bio and detailed family history.

*George Lonas's FindAGrave page says that he died 1780. Where the heck did they get that?! His will was proved 12 Mar 1793! Henry was his eldest son (only son of 1st wife Eva Margarethe Fassin, who d. three days after he was born).

The Johann Georg ("George" or also Americanized to "John G.") was born 1770, and is son of Leonard. The proof is in the property records. I'll post something shortly.

Georg Adam (a.k.a. "Adam Lonas") was brother to Henry by a different mother (Anna Rosina "Rosina" Dellinger), and is mentioned in father's will. His name is often blended with his first cousin George's in some awful amalgamation Johann Georg Adam Lonas. (The only child left out of George's will, Bk D p. 199, was Jacob, 1767-Jun 1859, Rosina's 1st born son, d. Knox Co. TN---not to be confused with Leonard's son Jacob, 1777- 4 May 1863, d. Fairfield Co., OH; most of Leonard's kids removed to OH, George's to TN.)
