Inventor. He created the Mae West life vest and held over 500 patents for his numerous inventions, including the pull tab on soft drink and beer cans. Born in Visalia, California, he attended Modesto High through the 10th grade, but dropped out of high school and then finished his education via night school followed by correspondence courses in drafting and mechanical engineering. As a young man working for his parents he invented the automatic chicken plucker, which revolutionized the poultry business; most recently he co-invented the Endo-Flex endotracheal tube, a breathing tube used during surgery.
