The Anthony families of Carbon, Lehigh, Monroe, and Northampton Counties, Pennsylvania were prominent in the late 1700's. Likely of Swiss origin, they came to Pennsylvania from Alsace near the Rhine River Valley. Few early records of this family survive.

Johann Peter Anthoni (Peter Anthony, Sr.) was born on April 27, 1726, in Bettwiller, Bas Rhin, Alsace, the son of Alsatian wheelwright, Johann Caspar Anthoni, and his wife, Maria Salome nee Leininger Anthoni. On September 15, 1748, Peter, Sr. arrived in Philadelphia on the ship, Two Brothers.



By 1757, Peter, Sr., his wife, Susanna nee Kester, and their children: Ludwig, Nicholas, George, Peter, Jr., John were living in Lehigh Township, Northampton County, and by 1775 they owned a tavern, an oil mill and tillable land. Naturalized a British citizen, Peter, Sr. was among nine Anthonys including several of his sons, who joined the Northampton County Militia in opposition to King George III.



Peter, Sr. represented Lehigh Township on the Northampton County Committee of Safety. In addition, he served as a judge of elections for the July 8, 1776 election of representatives from Lehigh, Moore, Allen, Chestnuthill, Penn and Towamensing Townships to attend the First Pennsylvania Provincial Convention in Philadelphia. http://www.ushistory.org/pennsylvania/birth3.html. Also, he served as building superintendent for the Lutheran congregation of St. Paul's Indianland Union Church.



Peter, Sr. and Susanna's children included: Nicholas; Peter, Jr.; Ludwig; George; Catharine; John, Eva Margaretha; Elizabeth; and Christina Magdalena. Susanna passed away in 1777, and Peter, Sr. married Elizabeth Arner, the widow of late Felix Arner, a resident of present day Rising Sun, North Whitehall Township, Lehigh County.



Peter remained an important local figure throughout his life. He passed away on March 1, 1817, and was buried at Indianland.
