After graduating from West Point, he did 4 years of survey duty before fighting in the Mexican War, where he received brevet promotions to the rank of 1st Lieutenant and Captain. After the Mexican War he performed assignments in the Topographical Engineers, receiving his regular army commission to Captain in 1856. Promoted to Brigadier General of Volunteers during the early stages of the Civil War, he assisted in the capture of New Madrid and Island No. 10 in 1862. Under General Henry W. Halleck, Pope and his troops participated in the advance on Corinth, Mississippi. At the height of his military career, he was brought east to command the Union army of Virginia, where he allowed General Robert E. Lee to unite his two wings under Generals Thomas J. Jackson and James Longstreet and drive the Union army from the plains of Manassas back toward Washington, D.C. Pope was sent to the Department of the Northwest where he helped quell a Sioux uprising in Minnesota. After that, he held various departmental commands until his seniority gave him promotion to Major General.
