Helen was born in Chicago, Illinois on 19 June 1903 (her original birth certificate was burned in the Great Chicago Fire.) She was the third child of Frederick George Bennett and Missouri Belle Lane. Her father and uncle ran a card parlor in Chicago. The family moved to Hanford, California, where they ran a boarding house (in census records), and she married Ernest J. Love when she was 16 years old. He was killed in their first year of marriage by being kicked in the head by a horse. She later moved to Los Angeles, California, where she worked in a dental office. This is where she met Rawlin James Asbury. They then moved to Riverside, California, where they spent the remainder of their lives She loved to play bridge, entertain and was an excellent cook.
