Son of Ernest Baltau and Isabella (Robertson) Kreitzburg Baltau.

Married 1) Margaret Morgan. Together they were the parents of Frederick Ement Baltau Jr. and William Morgan Baltau. Margaret died of tuberculosis.

Married 2) Loretta Dora Lash on Feb. 28, 1931 at 6 Hsiu Wei Lu, Ho Pei, Tientsin, China.
Together they were the parents of Edward Ement Baltau, Ralph Ray Baltau, Edna Isobel (Baltau) Johnson, Arthur J. Baltau, and Shirley Baltau.

During World War II, he, his wife and four youngest children were taken into custody by the Japanese and interned at Weihsien Civilian Assembly Center in Weihsien (now Weifang), Shantung Province.

Died in Warren State Hospital.
