Life Legacy

Elmer Erickson, 93, died Sunday, March 18, 2012 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. Funeral Service will be 1:00 PM Thursday, March 22 at Brandon Lutheran Church, with committal at a later date at Swedona Covenant Cemetery. Visitation begins at 4:00 PM Wednesday, March 21 at George Boom Funeral Chapel in Brandon, where the family will greet friends from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM.

Elmer Erickson, son of Henry and Helga (Froseth) Erickson, was born November 20, 1918 in Brandon, SD. He grew up and received his education there.

Elmer was united in marriage with Lois Wilkins on September 28, 1940 in Luverne, MN. He worked as a mechanic before entering the Air Force in 1943. In 1945, he started Erickson Garage in Brandon, staying with the business for 37 years before retiring. Elmer also helped organize the Brandon Volunteer Fire Department in 1958. He served as Fire Chief for about 17 years.

Elmer and Lois spent many years wintering in Arizona and South Texas. He was very proud of an accomplishment that few golfers achieve, shooting his age (84) at the age of 87. Elmer was one of the original members of the Brandon Golf Course and golfed through the summer of 2011. He enjoyed bowling, hunting and fishing. Dancing and music were also his passions. Elmer was the "Jack of all trades,"- he could fix almost anything.

Most of all during these last few years, Elmer loved to spend time with his special friend Dolly. He was a loving husband and a caring father, a wonderful grandfather and a friend to all who knew him.

Grateful for having shared his life are two children, Gail David, Arnold, MD, Gary Erickson and his wife, Donna, Lindstrom, MN; three grandchildren, Todd Erickson and his wife, Michelle, Torrance, CA, Lisa Johanson and her husband, Robert, Stacy, MN, Joni Miller and her husband, Robert, Stevensville, MD; 11 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Angie Foster and her husband, Hal, of Arizona; his special friend, Dolly Kittelson, Colton, SD; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Elmer was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 67 years, Lois, on April 20, 2007; a grandson, Jon David; his parents; his step-father, Peter Ousdahl; and a brother, Lloyd.
