Johanna's birth name was determined by her daughter Margaret's 1846 birth certificate.

She likely arrived in New York 31 May 1841 on the Governor Douglas, departing from Cork, Ireland. Age 28, i.e. born c.1812-1813.

There is a 8 Mar 1812 Roman Catholic baptism record for an infant Johanna Garvan, daughter of William Garvan and Margaret Keefe, in Cashel, County Tipperary, Ireland. This was likely her. William and Margaret Garvan also baptized Thomas and Denis in 1816, Ellen in 1827, Mary in 1830, and Honnoria in 1836. The range of ages show that they were young when she was born.

Death record says she was born in 1802 although this seems to have been an error. Census records show her as younger. According to the 1860 census, she was born c. 1810. According to the 1870 census, she was born c. 1815.

She married Garrett Duffy between her arrival in 1841 and the birth of Edward in 1844. They lived in Jersey City.

At least five children:
* Edward Duffy 1844-1880 (He hanged himself in NYC on Chambers St. )
* Margaret Duffy Hayward 1846-1919 married George Hayward
* Mary Ann Duffy Fitzgerald 1848-1917 married James J. Fitzgerald. Listed in censuses as being born in 1850 although she was baptized at St. Peter's 10 Dec 1848. William Fitzgerald 1878-1881 is buried with the Duffys.
* Catherine d.1852, likely born between 1849 and 1852 considering the birth years of other children but only the burial card has been found.
* Ellen Duffy 1854-1882

Grave unmarked. Cemetery card found.
