Myrtle Atkins Brown, 94 years old passed away Saturday evening, March 9, 2013.

She was born in Lenoir, North Carolina in 1918 to the late James R. and Virginia Bradley Atkins. She was preceded in death by her husband Roland H. Brown, retired Navy CPO, five brothers and two sisters.

Myrtle professed her faith in Jesus Christ at 10 years of age, becoming a charter member of Fairview Presbyterian Church in Lenoir, NC. After graduating high school, she studied cosmetology at Henshaw Beauty School of Culture in North Wilkesboro, NC. In 1944 she met and married her husband Roland H. Brown. As a Navy wife, she was fortunate to travel with him throughout the United States and Europe, with the highlight being when she lived in Athens, Greece and visiting the Corinth. In 1960, they settled in York County where she has resided ever since.

Mrs. Brown took great joy in serving others. She volunteered for many years with the Red Cross, receiving her 10 year pin for her service.

She was a lifetime member of the Presbyterian Church. She and her family joined Yorkminster Presbyterian Church, where she worked many years in the Sunday school department. She was also a longstanding member of the Women of the Church's Circle One.

She is survived by her loving children Paul R. Brown of Orange, VA and Susan B. Wood and husband Thomas of Shrewsbury, PA; her treasured grandchildren Chief Petty Officer Aaron T. Wood U.S.C.G and wife Sarah of Elizabeth City, NC and Ashley C. Eisenbeil and husband Robert of Dallastown, PA; three beloved great-grandchildren, Madison and Owen Wood and Aiden Eisenbeil; and many extended family members whom she loved very much.

The family would like to express a very special "thank you" to her church family at Yorkminster Presbyterian Church, her precious neighbors on Harris Grove Lane and her caregivers who watched over her these past two years. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, March 16 at 1pm at Peninsula Memorial Park Newport News, VA. Memorial gifts may be made to the American Red Cross. Amory Funeral Home, 410 Grafton Drive, Grafton VA 23692 is in charge of all funeral arrangements.
