Sarah was probably named for her paternal grandmother. Sarah was the first of at least eight children born to Mary M (Barrington) and Hugh Lawson Pettigrew.

Sarah married James Abraham Allen 16 March 1881 in Washington County, Arkansas. They had five children: Ida Belle, Hugh Abraham, Frank Chesley, Lloyd Lemuel, and Margaret Kinney "Madge."

Sarah spent most of her life in Washington County, Arkansas, but James and Sarah and their children moved to Whittier, California about 1905.
