Son of Jones W. and Margaret Tune Collins of Halifax County, Virginia who settle in DeSoto County, Mississippi. Like his father, James became a minister & "entered Mississippi College in September, 1880, at the age of thirty-six and graduated in the B. S. course in 1885, at the age of forty".

J. W. married 1. Susan Lee on 16 Dec 1867 in DeSoto County, Mississippi. Susan died on September 12, 1893 & is buried in the Shufordsville Cemetery, Lyon, Coahoma County, Mississippi.

J. W. then married 2. Thirmuthens (Tamothus) Hogan Cobb, widow of Dr. Frank R. Van Eaton. She is buried next to J. W.

Guardianship records from DeSoto County, Mississippi, Chancery Court Case #772. Bond dated 07 November 1854 names mother Margaret Collins, Hiram H. Collins & John Mitchell giving bond, stating Margaret Collins as the guardian of Leannah, Elizabeth, Lucinda, John and James Collins, minor heirs of Jones W. Collins deceased.
