The maiden name "Whittington" is attested in the 1870 census, although "Whitt" and "Whitney" have been circulated in family oral history.

Her birth family, according to family legend, was killed by "bushwhackers" when she was young. This may be a reference to the 1862 murder of her paternal grandfather by civil war irregulars. (Accounts vary on whether they sympathized with the north or south.) Her father was wounded in the raid, and ended up losing an arm to amputation. I have yet to find a trace of her parents, George and Matilda, or her older brother, Johnathan, after the 1870 census.

Not to be confused with Tobias Barnes' first wife, Charlotte Blankenship (b. 1854), who was Charlotta Whittington's aunt. (Charlotta Whittington's mother was Matilda Blankenship.)

Note: An earlier version of this memorial recorded Charlotta's name as "Charletta". That seems to have been a transcription error, as the form is not attested by the memorial markers.
