Memorial services were held for Clyde Randall Browning on Saturday, March 3, at 1 p.m. at the Nevada City Elks Lodge. Mr. Browning passed away on Feb. 21, 2007 at Spring Hill Convalescent Hospital. He was 92.

Mr. Browning was born to Arrnon and Adele Browning on June 8, 1914, in Nevada City. He was the fourth generation of his family to be born in the area. He completed the eighth grade at French Corral Elementary School.

Mr. Browning married Virginia Day on June 8, 1935, at Trinity Episcopal Church in Nevada City.

He worked for ACE Sheet Metal Works from 1931 until 1960. He then started Brownings Power-Vac Cleaning, which he eventually sold to his grandson, Michael Merchant.

Mr. Browning was a lifetime member of Nevada City Elks (over 60 years) and a former member of the Nevada County Country Club.

His hobbies included hunting, gardening, golf, playing cards, traveling and his family.

Mr. Browning installed the Del Oro tower in the 1940s with his partner Jens. It still sits above the Del Oro Theater. He also fabricated and installed the copper roof on top of the Bank of America Building in Nevada City where it stands today.

Mr. Browning is survived by his beloved wife of 71 years, Virginia Browning of Grass Valley; daughter and son-in-law, Diana and Sam Pello of Nevada City; daughter, Mary Church of Mission Viejo; sister, Irene Stewart of Arizona; brothers, David Browning of Modesto and Donald Browning of Challis, Idaho; grandchildren, Bill Merchant of Elk Grove, Debralee Merchant of Grass Valley, Michael and Beki Merchant of Grass Valley, Michelle Jenner and her companion Joe Ojeda of Roseville, Carol and Tim Connelly and Katie and Joe Rossetti of Placentia and Chandler Church of Costa Mesa; great-grandchildren, Lane Carlson, Elizabeth Merchant, Ali Merchant, Kaitlin Merchant, Robbie Merchant, and Madison, Joe and Nicholas Rossetti; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Mr. Browning was predeceased by his parents; son, C. Robert "Bob" Browning; brothers, Melvin, Harry, Bill and Walter Browning; and great-grandson, Tejae Carlson.

Memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of the Foothills, 12399 Nevada City Hwy. Grass Valley.
