Alva A. Wehrly, 85, Portland, died Tuesday at his home. He was born in Jay County to Lisle and Cora E. (Baldauf) Wehrly. He married Roberta J. Sheffer on May 4, 1947. She preceded him in death on March 15, 2009. He graduated from Madison Township School in 1943. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was an employee of Hummel Garage, Portland, from 1949 to 1963, worked for Locker Oil Company, Portland, from 1963 to 1973, and Portland Motor Parts from 1973 to 1990. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Portland. Survivors include two sons, Randy L. Wehrly and Alan D. Wehrly, both of Portland; a daughter, Joyce Nuckols, Montpelier; two sisters, Pauline Perkins and Catherine Theurer, both of Portland; seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Services are Friday at 10:30 a.m. in the Portland Chapel of Williamson and Spencer Funeral Home, with the Rev. John Dimmick officiating. Burial will be at Salamonia Cemetery, Salamonia, with Portland American Legion Post No. 211 conducting military graveside rites. Calling hours are Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
